What does the color purple mean?

I think all of us have seen those mysterious magic posters at one point or another. You know, the one with the masterful magician the amazing looking purple and black background?

Either way, no one would doubt that the color purple has a sort of royal feel to it (kings crown, Austin Powers and so on). After all, the LA Lakers have purple as one of their colors.
